ABERYSTWYTH Town showed they can ‘win ugly’ as they re-ignited their hopes of achieving a top six finish at the Welsh Premier League split with a crucial 3-0 win at Cefn Druids on Friday night.
The Seasiders entertain Bangor City tonight (Tuesday, 8pm) looking to build momentum going into their festive double-header with old rivals Newtown, at Park Avenue on Boxing Day, and at Latham Park on New Year’s Eve.
After a 13-day break from action following their Welsh Cup win over Holywell Town, it was another pleasing result for the Seasiders, but they had to dig deep at times.
“It was an ugly win,” manager Matthew Bishop said after the game. “I wouldn’t say it was a classic performance from us.
“We’ve had to defend well tonight, and fair play to Cefn Druids, they were really good with the ball and caused us a few problems.
“It’s been a long day for the lads, they have all been working and have jumped on a bus and travelled for four hours. So a performance like that was very pleasing.”
Bishop added: “We’ve scored three really good goals, and a penalty save from Chris Mullock has helped to keep a clean sheet. Overall it has been a really good night.
“I’m pleased that we got the result, and we have found a different way of winning. Tonight we had to be quite resolute and disciplined.
“There are a lot of tired bodies, but they deserved what they got.”
The Seasiders now embark on a crucial period, which will see them play Newtown twice, before facing Cefn Druids and Cardiff Met, and they have the advantage of having just two away games.
“I had a chat with the players in the week about how important the next six games were,” said Bishop.
“We talked about the mentality and approach that was required, and the difference tonight from maybe some of the other games was that we took our chances.”
Goals by Geoff Kellaway, Luke Borrelli and Kostya Georgievsky secured the points in a hard fought battle at The Rock, and Bishop said it was a big win psychologically.
“The first goal from Geoff was a great finish, after good combination play, which we’ve worked on in training this week,” he said.
“Luke Borrelli scored at a great time, and then Kostya has popped up at the end with a great finish.
“The fact that we can win ugly is really important, it shows that psychologically the lads can do it.
“It was a big win against a team around us in the table, and they are also fighting for a top six spot.
“We need to carry that on in our remaining matches. We’ve still got a long way to go, with five more games, with two away. It’s going to be tough, but you never know.”
Sam Rodon was set to return from suspension on Tuesday, and the Seasiders also hope Ricky Watts will be able to return to the squad from compassionate leave.
Kick off under the temporary floodlights is at the slightly later time of 8pm. Admission is £6 for Adults, £4 Concessions and £1 for children.
