TYWYN/BRYNCRUG exited the Central Wales Senior Challenge Cup on penalties as Knighton Town set up a quarter-final tie at Llanfair United.

The Radnor Robins had hit back from Aston Heath’s opening goal for the visitors to turn the tables through a Connor Bird penalty and Gareth Mansell, but Aled Jones forced extra time.

In the penalty shoot-out, Connor Bird, Mark Jones and Danny Ives all converted for Knighton, while keeper, Joe Prosser saved Tywyn’s second and third efforts.

Player-manager Adam Worton converted the decisive penalty to see Knighton through to the last eight of the competition.

The Radnor Robins had started the match brightly, and missed a number of chances, but it proved costly as the visitors took the lead through Heath on the half hour.

Knighton were soon back on terms, with Connor Bird scoring from the penalty spot after Mark Jones had been upended, but Gareth Mansell put Knighton in front in the second half, after Adam Worton’s corner was headed against the bar.Tywyn, however, hit back with Aled Jones making it 2-2, and extra-time produced no further goals - before Knighton held their nerve to make it through to the last eight.

Builth Wells also progressed to the quarter-finals on penalties after they hit back from being 3-0 down to draw 4-4 with 10-man Churchstoke, courtesy of two injury time goals.

Two goals from Joe Haycock and an Omar Bozdag goal had put Stoke in the driving seat, but the turning point of the tie saw the home side reduced to 10 men with their right back sent off just before half-time.

Ryan Powell headed one back for Builth from Shaun Powell’s corner early in the second half, but they then conceded when Haycock beat manager Chris Jones at his near post to complete his hat-trick.

Tom Bethell reduced the deficit with a penalty when Richie Powell was taken out - and two goals in the last five minutes forced extra-time. Jamie McIlroy scrambled Builth’s third, and then Josh Price equalised with virtually the last kick of the 90 minutes.

Adie Jones hit the bar in extra-time, but it went to penalties with Bethell, player-manager Jones, Johnny Samuel and Josh Price all converting.

Churchstoke missed two of their first three to give Builth a 4-1 win and an intriguing tie away at local rivals Llandrindod Wells in the quarter finals.

Earlier in the week, Llanidoes Town had bowed out of the competition with a hard-fought 1-0 loss at home to strong Cymru Alliance side Guilsfield, who will travel to Bow Street in the last eight.

A goal by Chris Cathrall late on proved enough to separate the sides, but the Daffs more than matched their highly rated visitors, and had chances to have caused an upset at Victoria Avenue.

Caersws beat high flying Spar Mid Wales League side Welshpool Town 3-1, courtesy of early second half goals from Luke Sherbon and Richard Davies.

Ian Probert had brought Welshpool back in contention, following Rhydian Davies’ early strike, but the Bluebirds came strong in the second half to set up a quarter-final tie away at Waterloo.

The full draw for the Central Wales Cup quarter finals is: Guilsfield v Bow Street, Llandrindod Wells v Builth Wells, Llanfair United v Knighton Town, Waterloo Rovers v Caersws..
