LLANYSTUMDWY emerged as 3-2 winners over Talysarn Celts, thanks to Tom Meeham’s late winner, to secure progress into the Gwynedd League’s Meditel Cup at the third attempt.

This first round tie had been postponed twice, because Talysarn’s pitch was waterlogged, resulting in a venue switch to Llan’s Dwyfor Park ground.

Aled Jones’s team made the most of home advantage as they established a 2-1 lead by half time, and then shrugged off a Celts’ recovery to secure their passage into round two.

Sion Parry scored twice for Llanystumdwy, after 31 and 43 minutes, followed by Meeham’s winner on 72, whereas Talysarn netted goals from Jac Jones on 20 and Dylan Roberts on 50.

The cup holders, Menai Bridge Tigers, had to battle to stay in the knockout, when gaining a win at Cemaes Bay in a tense penalty shoot-out, which ultimately produced a 5-4 decision.

The two teams had been inseparable at 1-1 at half-time and then 2-2 at full-time and again after extra-time.

Menai Bridge scored through Tom Parry on 27 minutes and Gareth Barker on 80, whereas Cemaes kept in contention thanks to goals from Tom Wood on 43 and Keenan Downey on 62.

Joining Menai Bridge in the semi-finals are Felinheli, who beat Bodedern Athletic 4-2, with strikes by Iwan Owen on 21 minutes, Griff John on 30 and 74 and Carwyn Dafydd on 43.

Bodedern had taken a fifth minute lead through Ryan Taylor and they later also benefited from an own-goal.

Aberffraw were 4-1 conquerors of Bontnewydd, after Gary Bolton’s opening goal on 20 minutes and then vitally a hat-trick by Richard Roberts, on 60, 82 and 86, with the visitors managing a reply from Gareth Edwards on 70.

In the only league match played, Nefyn United earned their spurs by outscoring the league leaders, Waunfawr, by 1-0, the solitary goal scored by Ifan Gwilym 10 minutes from the end.

Harlech Town’s Beach Road ground again had pools of standing water, which meant their bottom-three showdown with Beaumaris was called off.
