An emphatic 57-7 home win for Pwllheli at home to Mold kept up the pressure on Division One North leaders Llandudno, and just two points separate the top two sides, with fourth games left.

Pwllheli go head to head with hosts Llandudno in the match of the day on Saturday, and the outcome will have a massive bearing on the destiny of this year’s title.

Mold started with the light wind at their backs, but Pwllheli started the strongest.

They attacked their visitors from the outset and it took them only two minutes to register their first score of the game.

Receiving the ball from a wayward kick, the home side inter-passed to put flanker and captain Tom Parry in the clear, and his pace took him past the cover defence to score. Nick Butterworth converted.

With Pwllheli looking very dominant at the set scrum, the visiting team were regularly deprived of clean possession. Fifteen minutes in, Pwllheli’s forwards and backs combined well to make ground before releasing Tom Parry to score his second try, this time unconverted.

Once again Pwllheli’s line-out stuttered, but they were quicker to the loose ball and the backs were provided with a regular supply of quality possession. On 23 minutes talisman second row Geraint Parry scored the third try, following a powerful drive by Pwllheli’s eight.

It took only a further three minutes for Pwllheli to score their bonus point try.

Again swift inter-passing and a rampaging charge by second Huw Williams set up the try for Nick Butterworth, and he then also slotted over the conversion.

Mold’s heads did not drop and they took full advantage of a poor defensive kick to set up an incisive attack, which saw them score under the posts. They added the straightforward conversion.

Pwllheli atoned for their error just before half-time, and again it was Butterworth who scored the try, and added the conversion for a 29-7 lead at the interval.

Pwllheli were a little disjointed in the opening minutes of the second period but soon settled to add four more tries. Nick Butterworth scored the first, before Tom Parry completed his hat-trick, and made it four five minutes later.

The coup de grace came before the end, as fullback Myrddin ap Dafydd scored his side’s ninth try after a searing run. Replacement Osian Parry Jones demonstrated his value by converting all four.

The match was preceded by Welsh second row Cory Hill giving a coaching session to Pwllheli’s Under 13s and 14s, arranged in conjunction with IZUZU and the WRU and it generated much interest.

Pwllheli’s Youth team match against Ruthin got a bit feisty at times, but they were good value for their 21- 0 win. The Youths were drawn away to Cobra in the North Wales Plate semi-finals.

Pwllheli’s Seconds lost 31-7 away to Shotton Steel, but their depleted side competed well and put in a decent performance.

BALA 36 CAERNARFON 26• BALA remained in the mix for a top three finish in Division One North after they recorded an exciting 36-26 home success over Gwynedd rivals Caernarfon.

The bonus point was in the bag by half-time, with captain Moi Dafydd leading by example with a try in the first minute. Winger Elgan Evans added a brace of tries, and hooker Endaf Jones and prop Alwyn Dylan also crossed the try line.

Bala eased off in the second half, but a converted try by Miall Roberts, with just two minutes left to play, denied Caernarfon a losing bonus point. Argentinian Javier Pereyra marked his final appearance for Bala with three conversions.
