Eighteen schools in Ceredigion still do not have a 20mph speed limit on roads outside their gates despite safety concerns, a council report has outlined.

Ceredigion County Council’s annual review of speed limits says that the 18 schools, mostly in the south of the county, do not have the traffic-calming measures or part-time signs seen outside most schools in the county.

At Felinfach and Ciliau Aeron schools, the speed limit outside the school gates remains 40mph on the A482.

There are still 30mph limits outside Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron secondary school as well as primary schools in Aberporth, Beulah, Borth, Bronant, Brynhoffnant, Cenarth, Cwmcou, Devil’s Bridge, Dihewyd, Llangwyryfon, Llangybi, Llechryd, Pontrhydfendigaid, Synod Inn and Talgarreg.

The council report said that, while there are schools that do not have a 20mph limit, some may not be needed “pending the outcome of reviews of continued educational provision at these school sites.”

The report said that “physical and often expensive traffic calming measures would be required to install permanent 20mph limits at these locations” and that “part-time limits will require expensive electronic signage.”

The council said that since the last review of speed limits “there have been a number of requests from local members and the public to reduce speed limits in a number of settlements and by schools".

The council said it will “address each of these locations and identify whether a change in speed limit is an appropriate action".
