A grieving grandfather has said that a reduced speed limit on a dangerous stretch of road between Bow Street and Aberystwyth could have saved his granddaughter’s life.

Ellie Bryan, 18, died on Sunday, 17 November, after the car she was a passenger in was involved in a crash on the A487 at Comins Coch the night before.

Her grandfather, George Bryan, told the Cambrian News that “action must be taken” to make the A487 road safe.

That stretch of road also claimed the life earlier this year of Llanbadarn councillor Paul James, who had been riding a bicycle in training for a charity ride when a crash occurred.

There have also been several serious incidents on the stretch in the last four years.

“We all know that there have been numerous accidents at this section of road, some resulting in death, but it looks as if nothing is being done,” said Mr Bryan.

“A speed limit of 40mph should be extended from the top of Penglais and to the turning for Penrhyncoch, plus road markings ‘40’.

“I must ask how long does it take to do a speed limit and road markings?

“Even temporary ones would help, then my granddaughter Ellie may not have died on 17 November.

“If there is any way of mitigating these sort of accidents and save lives then we should do it."
