Madam,
Ceredigion County Council needs to engage in some joined-up thinking on climate change and sustainability. (‘Five-year plan to reduce carbon emissions’).
The future roll-out of 5G in the county is likely to cancel out any energy savings made through new LED street-lighting and other initiatives; even the UK’s 5G-boosting website identifying one of the ‘potential negatives’ of the technology as ‘the vast amount of energy that 5G networks are likely to consume’.
Add to that the rare earth minerals needed for the hardware, rising amounts of toxic e-waste, the massive increase in wireless pollution that 5G deployment will entail, and you have an environmental disaster in the making. Trees may also need to be felled to ensure coverage in some areas, and there are serious concerns about privacy and security too.
As a wholly unsustainable technology, 5G should simply not go ahead in Ceredigion— or anywhere else in Wales.
5G is a product of short-term thinking that is incompatible with the Well-Being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 and with any commitments to sustainability.
Yours etc, A Fitzgerald, Wiser Wireless Wales.
