After losing five and a half stone, mobile hairdresser Nia Gore is planning to do a 5km run to give a boost to two charities.

Nia, 43, who lives on a farm at Comins Coch, near Aberystwyth, is fundraising for the chemotherapy day unit at Bronglais Hospital and for Blood Bikes Aberystwyth.

She is planning to do the run around farmland on Sunday, 29 November, but says she knows it will be hard-going as she is new to running.

“After losing five and a half stone in weight so far and seeing a massive improvement in my fitness, I’ve decided to do a sponsored 5km run around the fields at home,” said Nia.

“To a lot of very fit people 5km is nothing, but to someone who didn’t start jogging until July this year, it’s a big thing.

“But I wanted to raise money for local charities, for Bronglais’ chemotherapy unit and Blood Bikes Aberystwyth.”

Nia is no stranger to charity fundraising. In the last four years, the self-employed hairdresser has raised nearly £14,000 through coffee mornings, tractor runs and a head shave.

“My husband, Dusty, was diagnosed with neck and throat cancer four years ago,” said Nia. “He had to have surgery and radiotherapy, but thankfully has now had the all-clear. My Dadcu also suffered from cancer.

“The fundraising was really started by my daughter Elin, who was then 10, who arranged her own coffee morning to raise money for cancer charities after her dad’s diagnosis. We have just carried on fundraising.

“I had a tractor run planned for the beginning of October but have cancelled it because of the social distancing restrictions and wanting to keep everyone safe. So, I am doing this run instead and hope to organise another event as well before the end of the year.”

Nia added: “These are two fantastic charities, that we so very much need. They need as many funds as possible, so it would be great if people could show their support by donating.”
