A COUNCIL decision to erect national speed limit signs along a popular multi-use trail near Aberystwyth has been described as “madness”.
Llanfarian resident Bryan Blair told the Cambrian News that the 60mph signs have recently been put up along Lôn Ty Llwyd, a single-track road near the village which forms part of the Ystwyth Trail.
The 20-mile trail links Aberystwyth and Tregaron via Rhydyfelin, Llanfarian, Llanilar, Trawscoed, and Ystrad Meurig, and is used by cyclists, ramblers, horse riders, and families.
And Mr Blair claims the erection of the new signs is “dangerous”, considering the nature of the road and the types of traffic which use it.
“Road speed signs have been erected on Lôn Ty Llwyd where the lane leaves the village, indicating that past this point, you can now drive at speeds of up to 60mph,” said Mr Blair.
“This lane is very narrow and is wide enough for only one vehicle.
“Anyone walking this lane when a vehicle comes either jumps into a ditch on one side, or onto a very narrow grass verge on the other.
“The lane forms part of the Ystwyth Trail and is well used by cyclists, ramblers, families, mums with pushchairs, and riders on horseback.
“It is madness as these signs suggest it is safe for vehicles to travel down the Ystwyth Trail at speeds of up to 60mph.”
A Ceredigion council spokesperson said the road beyond the new 20mph zone has always been subject to the national speed limit, and the only thing to have changed is the erection of national speed limit signs.
