HURRICANE force 94mph winds have wreaked havoc in and around Aberystwyth this morning.

Gusts clocked at 82 knots — 64 knots is considered hurricane force — were measured at Aberystwyth RNLI Lifeboat station at 10.30am on Thursday, 17 November, with the exceptionally high winds lasting for around 10 minutes.

The lifeboat station confirmed it was the highest speed they have ever recorded.

Police confirmed the closure of Penglais Hill due to a fallen tree, with South Road, South Marine Terrace, Pier Street, Laura Place, Kings Street, parts of Great Darkgate Street and Market Street also understood to be closed due to safety fears over unstable slates and chimneys on roofs.At Aberystwyth Harbour, a small fishing boat has capsized and sunk, and another boat has been blown off its blocks.Damage has also reportedly been caused at Bronglais Hospital.Two floodlights have been blown down at Aberystwyth Football Club, which has led to the cancellation of tomorrow night's Dafabet Welsh Premier League clash against Cefn Druids and there is also significant damage to property at Aberystwyth University’s Penglais Campus.The A487 at Tre’r-ddol is also closed in both directions because of two fallen trees, and the A4159 between the Lovesgrove roundabout and Capel Dewi is also closed.A Mid West Fire Service spokesman said they received reports of 20 caravans being overturned at Clarach Bay Holiday Village, and arrived at the scene at 11.02am.They isolated a number of gas cylinders and said the site is currently being evacuated.Boss Tom Scarrott tweeted that there had been "absolute carnage" and that he had had a "lucky escape" as nobody had been injured.The B4572 road between Clarach and Borth is also understood to be closed.

A police spokesperson said: “Police have been called to South Marine Terrace, Aberystwyth, following a call received at 11.13am about debris falling from the roof of a property.

“Weather-related damage at Clarach Bay Caravan Park has also been reported to police.”

The fire service confirmed they were attending several weather-related incidents.
