The man accused of arson of an Aberystwyth seafront hotel has now been charged with murder.

And police have named the man who tragically died in the blaze.

Juozas Tunaitis has been confirmed as the man who died in the fire at the Ty Belgrave Hotel on 25 July.

Police said that Mr Tunaitis was working as a contractor at Aberystwyth University as a fire safety officer.

Damion Anthony Harris, 31, of Llwyn On, Pwllhobi, is currently in custody awaiting a hearing at Swansea Crown Court after being charged with arson with intent to endanger life.

Harris will appear by videolink at Aberystwyth Magistrates Court for new charges of murder of Mr Tunaitis and intent to cause grievous bodily harm to Richard Simnett, who suffered serious injuries when he fell from the hotel’s roof as he and his family tried to escape the blaze.

Police said they had informed Mr Tunaitis’s family in Lithuania.

A spokesperson said: “His family has been informed of the charge, and are being supported by officers.

“They have expressed their thanks to all emergency services involved in the response to the fire and the investigation.”

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Neil Jenkins said: “Our thoughts are with the family of Mr Tunaitis at this time and we will continue to support them through the criminal justice process.

“We would also like to thank the community in Aberystwyth for their support and patience during what has been an intense investigation so far.”
