Armed police officers were called to an Aberystwyth property after reports that a man was in possession of a gun.
Officers were called to Corporation Street at around 4.20am after a report of an assault, but armed police then attended at Northgate Street following a report that a suspect could have had a gun.
That led to Northgate Street being closed by police in both directions for around 40 minutes at around 9am as scene-of-crime officers attended.
Police said a man has since been arrested and is in custody.
A spokesperson said: “Dyfed-Powys Police officers were called to Corporation Street in Aberystwyth at around 4.20am to a report of an assault at a property.
“Officers at the scene were told the suspect might have been in possession of a firearm, so further units were sent to the area, focusing on Northgate Street.
“A man was swiftly arrested on suspicion of assault and making threats to kill and is currently in police custody.
“Officers have now thoroughly searched a premises, where an imitation firearm was found.
“Firearms resources have now withdrawn from the area.
“We would like to assure that members of the public were not at threat of harm at any point during the incident.”
