An Aberystwyth woman has urged people to be careful disposing of barbecues after a bin fire on one of Aberystwyth’s busiest streets.

Alice Henning and her partner raised the alarm at around 7.30pm on Sunday, 12 May, after seeing the bin fire on Terrace Road, which Alice believes was caused when someone threw away a disposable barbecue in the public litter bin, near WH Smith.

She said: “We called the fire department and they took 20 minutes to get there.

“During this time the owner of the White Horse Pub emptied five large tubs of water in it and it still did not go down.

“I stood by the bin and asked locals and tourists not to put rubbish in there as the emergency services were on their way.

“Despite this, a middle-aged white man on a bike ignored my warnings and put a plastic bottle in there.

“Myself and my partner believe it was a barbecue that was thrown in the bin despite the council providing necessary resources to throw things like this away in the appropriate place.

“We believe that the community and tourists need to be more vigilant and look after our environment better.”

A Mid and West Wales Fire Service spokesperson said: “On Sunday, 12 May, at 7.44pm, firefighters from Aberystwyth attended a bin fire on Terrace Road, Aberystwyth.

“The fire service extinguished the fire using a hose reel jet and left the incident at 7.56pm.”
