CONCERNS have been raised over fire cover in Tywyn following a blaze in the high street.

The fire erupted in an outhouse behind J B Owens Hardware store in the early evening of Thursday, 27 October, destroying the outhouse, before spreading to other properties nearby.

The blaze, which raged for two hours, caused substantial damage to the nearby pet shop and neighbouring church, although the damage was mainly external.

Three fire crews from Tywyn, Aberdyfi and Bangor rushed to the scene just before 7pm and quickly closed off the High Street to deal with the inferno.

Town councillor John Pughe believes the incident highlights the lack of resources for emergency services in the area.

“Tywyn’s fire service wasn’t first to the scene, which is frankly a concern,” the councillor told the Cambrian News.

“Not that I blame the lads at all, I used to be a part-time firefighter and I know how hard they work. It’s just they don’t have the resources or staff levels they need to do their job.

“Fire chiefs really need to solve recruitment issues in the area before we face a real tragedy. It’s only a matter of time.”
