CALLS are being made for CCTV to return to Lampeter town centre in a bid to crack down on people drinking on Harford Square.
Councillors are worried that people ‘camped out all day with their six-packs of beer’ on Harford Square are scaring away tourists to the town.
Speaking at a recent town council meeting, Cllr Hag Harris conceded that the problem was ‘creeping back’ into the town, reporting that police officers had confiscated alcohol from people on the square.
Cllr Helen Thomas said the issue had worsened recently. “You get people camped out their all day with their six-packs of beer,” she added.
Speaking to the Cambrian News, former town councillor Dorothy Williams said: “I don’t really think the problem’s come back, because it never really went away.
“When you get people sleeping rough or openly drinking alcohol, it’s not a good impression for any town.
“The drinking that goes on at Harford Square means that visitors cannot sit down and enjoy an ice cream in the sunshine.”
Cllr Thomas added: “We can make as much fuss as we like, but unless there is enforcement then nothing will be done.
“There’s a sign in Parc-yr-Orsedd prohibiting drinking but it’s in the middle of the park where no-one ever sees it.
“If you take a walk down there you’ll see cans and bottles everywhere – this problem isn’t just found in Harford Square.”
