CALLS for an improved CCTV service have been made after an attempt was made to break into a builder’s van - just two days after he moved into his new flat.
John Humphreys, who was born and raised in Dolgellau, found that somebody had caused £200 worth of damage to the lock on his van after he parked his vehicle on Eldon Square.
The attempted break-in to John’s van took place on Friday night, 3 March.
“It’s a shame there’s no CCTV in the square, crimes like this could easily be prevented,” John said.
“Dolgellau used to be the kind of place you could leave your front door open with no worries but times have changed, we have to accept that.
“I’m told the cameras are there but that they don’t work. CCTV in this day and age isn’t overly expensive so why not ensure residents’ safety and bring it in like almost every other town has?
“The damage to my van is annoying but it could have been a lot worse. What if a really serious crime took place? We need the technology to make sure something horrible doesn’t happen or, if it does, we’re able to catch those responsible.
“Who knows, maybe one day we’ll catch up with the rest of the world!”
