Four new cameras have been installed in Cardigan as part of Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn’s pledge to reinvest in a public CCTV system.

The installation programme saw cameras installed at High Street, Pont y Cleifion, Pendre and Morgan Street.

The camera locations were decided following a review of a crime pattern analysis and in consultation with partner agencies.

The work is being carried out by contractors Baydale Control Systems Ltd and the hi-tech cameras are being supplied by Hikvision UK & Ireland.

“I am delighted that Cardigan is to benefit from four new hi-tech CCTV cameras,” said Mr Llywelyn, who visited the town on Friday to speak to residents and business owners.

“The big difference between these cameras and the ones previously installed is that, from May, the new system will be monitored 24/7 from police headquarters in Carmarthen. These cameras are more modern and will relay pictures in HD, thereby providing greater clarity, better for purposes of identification.”

Mr Llywelyn, who made the reintroduction of CCTV a central plank of his election manifesto, added: “Having studied criminology I regard such cameras as vital tools to enable police to prevent and deter crime.

“They will also provide better evidence to allow the criminal justice system to operate more efficiently as well as assisting in a reduction of the fear of crime.”

AM Elin Jones, who accompanied Mr Llywelyn on a tour of the town, said he had acted on the concerns of businesspeople and residents.

“CCTV makes people safer and feel safer in their environment as well as assisting the police in their work, so everybody wins,” she said.
