A NEW Quay councillor has praised the police after a drunken reveller who damaged his van was traced through spots of blood found on the bonnet.

Jason Sweeney, 29, admitted criminal damage after smashing the windscreen of the van belonging to Cllr Daniel Potter on 4 May and was ordered to pay him £416 compensation.

Prosecutor Helen Tench said Cllr Potter had called the police on 5 May after he discovered that his van’s windscreen had been smashed.

After finding blood on the bonnet, police traced it to Sweeney, of 33 Heol Scwrfa, Swansea Road in Merthyr Tydfil, who told police that he had drunk a bottle of Sambuca and could not remember the incident.

Speaking after the case, Cllr Potter said: “I would like to congratulate the police on doing a good job. Their actions have restored my faith in them.

“Fortunately incidents of this nature are not at all common here in New Quay. I’ve never previously had any problems with my van - on this occasion it just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
