CARDIGAN town councillors are planning to ramp up security in the town in a crackdown on anti-social behaviour and alcohol-fuelled violence.

Members will decide next month on how much money they can afford to spend on restarting and upgrading CCTV coverage.

The move follows a recent meeting with Dyfed-Powys Police Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn, who said that the locations of the town’s CCTV cameras needed to be reassessed.

And his comments have received the enthusiastic endorsement of town mayor Cllr Clive Davies, who believes there is a strong and urgent case for Cardigan to develop an updated system.

“I know from personal experience the need for such cameras in Cardigan after a close relative of mine was hospitalised following an assault in High Street on Barley Saturday,” he told the Cambrian News.

“Mr Llewelyn feels it is not simply a case of switching on the cameras that are already there, because the pattern of people’s movements may have changed since this equipment was first installed.

“When it comes to CCTV he’s dead keen. Apart from acting as a crime deterrent, these cameras are also extremely valuable when it comes to gathering evidence in the event of an assault or a case of criminal damage, for example.”
