TWO elderly people are still fighting for their lives after they had to be cut free from the wreckage of their vehicle and airlifted to hospital following a collision on Sunday.

Emergency services, including two ambulances, rushed to the scene of the crash at the junction of the A470 and the A4212 near Trawsfynydd at approximately 5pm on Sunday afternoon.

A silver Peugeot Expert van and a Jeep Grand Cherokee collided with enough force to buckle at least one of the vehicles and trap the occupants.

The elderly pair in the Jeep had to be cut free from the wreckage by firefighters before being airlifted to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that two people were freed using hydraulic cutting equipment: “We were called at 5.13pm yesterday to a road traffic collision in Trawsfynydd. Two crews attended from Blaenau and Dolgellau.

“Two casualties were taken to hospital by helicopters and crews used cutting equipment to release them.”

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: “Police are appealing for witnesses following a collision at the junction of the A4212 and the A470, Trawsfynydd.

“The collision happened at 5.05pm on Sunday, 5 August, and involved a black Jeep Grand Cherokee and a silver Peugeot Partner panel van.

“A man and woman travelling in the Jeep were both airlifted to hospital where they remain at this time.

“If you are a witness to this road traffic collision, please call us on 101 quoting the event number W110156.”

A spokesperson for the Welsh Ambulance service said: “We were called at approximately 5.25pm yesterday (Sunday) to reports of a two-vehicle road traffic accident on the A470.

“We sent one emergency ambulance, one rapid response vehicle and crews were supported by Wales Air Ambulances. Two patients were airlifted to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.”
