EMERGENCY services rushed to Dolgellau town centre on Tuesday when an elderly woman was knocked over by a double-decker bus.

It is understood that the pensioner was struck by a reversing bus in Eldon Square at lunchtime.

The woman was left with non-life-threatening injuries and taken to Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth by road for treatment.

Peter Barnes, who owns Dipsy Dragon Cyf on the square, said he was upset for the woman involved but believed the accident was “inevitable”.

“Sometimes there’s as many as six buses on the square as well as crowds of people, especially when the college is in,” he said.

Mr Barnes has recently started a petition to stop buses from idling in the square, suggesting that buses should only pick up/drop off in the vicinity and park elsewhere.

“My heart goes out to the woman obviously but this shows there is a real problem,” he added.

Mr Barnes added: “Eldon Square should be a stunning location but instead it’s a horrible, smelly, noisy bus terminal.”

The square has been subject of much debate of late and pedestrianisation was discussed at a recent town council meeting.

No-one from bus company Lloyds Motors or service operator Traws Cymru was available for comment.
