A FORMER Aberystwyth University student set up a camera in a student house bathroom to film female students in the shower.
Kyle Ryunosuke Walker, 22, pleaded guilty to two charges of voyeurism after the camera he had hidden was discovered and police found footage of women using the bathroom on his laptop.
He has been warned that he could be jailed or sentenced in crown court after magistrates asked for a pre-sentence report to cover all sentencing options.
Prosecutor Steve Davies said that police were contacted by two female students who had discovered the camera that Walker had hidden in the bristles of a toilet brush.
One of the students had been cleaning the bathroom and discovered the camera, that had been directed at the shower area, so researched it to find out how to check what footage it had before finding a video clip of a naked female who had been using the bathroom.
Police arrested Walker, who now lives at 84 Faringford Road in Stratford, who immediately admitted that he had placed the camera.
Speaking to police he said: “Okay, it was me. I was filming the girls. I’m a perv.”
Officers seized his laptop and found two video clips, one 12 minutes long and the other six minutes long, showing women in the bathroom.
In an interview, Walker told police that the camera was sound-activated. He said he had deliberately placed the camera there in an attempt to film people naked, but claimed he hadn’t known it was illegal until he had researched it.
Defence solicitor Stephen Welch said he accepted there were several aggravating factors including a breach of trust by Walker, but asked magistrates to retain sentencing and not send it to crown court.
He said that while Walker, who has since moved university, had kept footage, he had not attempted to distribute it to anyone.
Magistrates adjourned sentencing until 2 December to allow a pre-sentence report to be completed, but warned that they could jail Walker or send the case to be sentenced at crown court.
Walker was released on conditional bail.
