Borth firefighters have welcomed a Small Fires Unit to their fire station, during a handover ceremony which saw assistant chief fire officer Roger Thomas present the keys of the vehicle to the crew.

The SFU is a specialist fire appliance, capable of responding to incidents involving small fires and minor special service calls. It can carry up to five persons and has a water tank of 450 litres.

The role of the SFU will be to attend small fires within the Borth area.

Group manager Sion Slaymaker, head of response for Ceredigion, said: “We are delighted to receive this Small Fires Unit at Borth. Borth Fire Station is one of only two stations within mid and west Wales which is crewed by volunteers, and therefore plays a unique and vital operational role in our ability to respond to emergencies.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteer firefighters of Borth, as their continued support ensures we can provide the best protection to the community of Borth and the surrounding areas.

“If you are interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter at Borth Fire Station, contact the recruitment team on 01267 226832 or email [email protected].”

Assistant chief fire officer Roger Thomas said: “The Small Fires Unit is strategically stationed at Borth, as the appliance is capable of accessing narrower rural roads and reaching certain remote locations with greater ease compared to a standard rescue pump.”
