Aberystwyth firefighters have been saluted for dealing with one of the biggest blazes in the town’s recent history.

They were joint winners of the Chief Fire Officer’s Exceptional Achievement Award at the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service Celebrating Success Awards Ceremony for their response to the fire at Ty Belgrave on the seafront in July.

In total over 18 appliances and 110 firefighters attended the scene “rescuing a total of 12 individuals from the fire and preventing significant fire spread to adjoining properties”.

“Without the quick thinking, skill and brave actions of this crew the outcome could have been so terribly different,” the awards ceremony at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea, was told.

At the ceremony, hosted by BBC Sports presenter Tomos Dafydd, staff from across the brigade were awarded for their tremendous efforts, outstanding commitment and continuous contribution to the fire and rescue service.

It was an opportunity for the team to be recognised and awarded for the dedicated work they deliver daily to better serve the communities that they protect.

The People’s Choice Award also went to Aberystwyth Fire Station. This year the award organisers asked members of the public nominate and vote for their People’s Choice.

Aberystwyth Station was nominated for a whole host of reasons, including its operational response, involvement in the community and the addition of a community café – the voting made the station clear winners in the category.
