A children’s nursery in Cellan, near Lampeter, has had to temporarily close down after it was badly damaged in a blaze.

A spokesperson for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue said the fire was reported at the two-storey Old School shortly after 11.30pm on Wednesday night.

The one-time village school houses the Meithrinfa Y Dyfodol nursery which can cater for up to 60 children.

Four fire crews tackled the blaze which is understood to have broken out in the building’s roof.

“We were called to reports of a fire at a property in Cellan, outside Lampeter, at 11.42pm on Wednesday,” said the spokesperson.

“Fire crews from Lampeter, Tregaron, Tumble, and an hydraulic platform from Aberystwyth were sent to the scene.

“Crews, wearing breathing apparatus, used two hose reel jets, an aerial platform and thermal imaging cameras to extinguish the fire. Crews were in attendance until 3.03am on Thursday.”

Officers from Dyfed-Powys Police who were also at the scene have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.

The nursery is currently closed after the fire damaged parts of the building, but nobody was injured.

Dwynwen Davies, the nursery’s director, could not be contacted for a comment.

A post on the nursery’s Facebook page read: “Very sorry to be the bearer of really bad news.

“Our nursery has been badly damaged by fire in the early hours. We will therefore be closed for a few days while we organise another location.

“We will contact everyone tomorrow with an update. Sincere apologies. It’s been a horrible night.”
