A FIRE in Porthmadog is thought to have been started deliberately, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service has said.

Firefighters from the service, who attended Penamser Industrial estate last night, said it looked like a portable cabin had been set on fire on purpose.

Thick smoke could be seen coming from the industrial estate last night, and the fire brigade received a call to attend shortly before 8pm.

Porthmadog resident Louise Jellyman was in her car when she spotted the smoke.

She told the Cambrian News what she saw.

"Myself and my friend, Elizabeth Bosley, were sat in the car in the Lidl car park when we spotted the smoke at around 7.55pm.

"We walked to the far end of the car park to see, and we saw it was getting darker and thicker. We heard the sirens and saw the fire engine going there.

“My partner came out of work at just after 8pm, and we started driving to his home when I took this picture, as the smoke was getting even thicker.

"My parents live in the direction the smoke was travelling so I called them to warn them, then thought I should warn the other residents in the town, so we stopped to take that picture to share."

Louise was concerned for people living nearby.

"It looked like it took hold very quickly, so whatever was burning was obviously very flammable. We could just see billowing black smoke, and I was obviously concerned for anyone nearby."

A spokesperson for North Wales Fire Service said: "Time of call was 7.56pm on 28 July to the Penamser Industrial estate, Porthmadog. There was one portable cabin well alight.

"There was 100 per cent damage and it looks as though it was a deliberate fire. Stop was called at 9.11pm. Two appliances attended."
