A 20-year-old man who smashed a bottle over the head of another man then dragged the jagged edges across his cheek has been sent to a young offenders’ institution for six years.

A jury at Caernarfon crown court after a four-day trial had found Rhun Glyn of Adwy Ddu, Penrhyndeudraeth, guilty of wounding Arwel Roberts, 20, with intent during a late-night incident at Blaenau Ffestiniog in July last year.

Judge Huw Rees described it on Wednesday as “a wicked piece of violence” for which he had shown no remorse. His victim had been left with long-lasting scarring to his face.

It happened in the street at Fron Fawr after Mr Roberts and a group of friends had been watching football at Porthmadog and were told there was a party at Blaenau.

They made their way there, taking some drink but when they arrived at the house Glyn emerged and the incident took place.

When police got to Glyn’s home at 12.45am he was in the shower and the clothes he’d been wearing were in the washing machine.

Defence barrister Kenneth Grant said Glyn was not a robust young man and had acted out of character. Locking up a man of his age could have a significant effect and he urged the judge to be as lenient as he could.

The judge said Glyn, 19 at the time, had caused a serious disfiguring injury to the face of Mr Roberts which had required 17 stitches. Injuries were close to his eye and they could have caused sight impairment or even loss of vision.

Judge Rees said: “You smashed that bottle on his head in a deliberate and forceful way, dragging it down his face.

“A weapon had been used purposefully and it had been suggested he was under the influence of drink or “off your head on drugs.”

The judge imposed a restraining order “for the rest of your life” to prevent him contacting named individuals including Mr Roberts.

Judge Rees declared: “You didn’t show any remorse, you tried to brazen this case out.”
