A TANYGRISIAU man who threatened to stab police officers in a siege-style incident in Blaenau Ffestiniog has been jailed for 15 months.
Specially trained police negotiators and armed officers were called in when the incident was sparked on 6 December by 41-year-old Kenneth Adam Hyde (pictured right), which lasted five hours.
Hyde, who admitted the charge of affray, was jailed for 15 months at Caernarfon Crown Court last Friday.
At a previous hearing, Llandudno magistrates were told that the alarm on 6 December was raised by Nia Pugh, who lives in a flat in Llygad yr Haul, just off The Square. She dialled 999 to report that her partner, 41-year-old Kenneth Hyde, was threatening her.
She remained on the line for 37 minutes during which time Hyde could be heard shouting in the background.
When asked whether he had injured her Ms Pugh replied: “No, not yet”, but prosecutor Diane Williams told Llandudno magistrates that she was clearly distressed.
Officers surrounded the property and Hyde, who was wielding a knife, shouted at them to “f*** off”.
Mrs Williams said they didn’t want to force entry into the building because of the risk that Hyde would harm Ms Pugh or himself.
“He said he would hurt someone or slit his own throat,” she said.
He also shouted: “If any officers come through that f***ing door I’ll f***ing stab them.”
Ms Pugh became hysterical and a friend of Hyde’s tried to persuade him to give himself up, which he eventually did after five hours.
“He was under the influence of something,” said the prosecutor.
Hyde was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd and when interviewed said he had taken crack cocaine and amphetamines, and heard voices telling him to injure himself.
Detective inspector Gerwyn Thomas at Caernarfon CID said: “Hyde is a prolific offender with a depressing track record of violence and dishonesty and so the sentence is significant for both his victim and the local community.
“On 6 December his actions traumatised his victim and his subsequent refusal to give himself up to attending Police Officers and continued anti-social behaviour disrupted the whole community for several hours.
“I welcome the sentence and hope it will provide the public with reassurance and make our communities safer.”
