POLICE have been accused of being too slow in dealing with irresponsible motorists who park on pavements in Aberystwyth, blocking access for mums with prams and disabled people in wheelchairs.

Cllr Mark Strong criticised the police’s response after he complained that pavements in the Queens Road area are regularly being blocked by motorists parking fully on the pavement forcing disabled people and parents with pushchairs to walk in the road.

He claimed he was left waiting for around 40 minutes after phoning the police to ask for someone to take action against the owner of a vehicle parked blocking a pavement after making a string of complaints.

He said: “The first time I phoned the police they said it was a council issue, but I’d checked and the police had previously said that obstruction was an issue for the police.

“I called them on Sunday, 6 March, as there was a vehicle parked completely on the pavement. I waited something like 40 minutes in the cold and rain for nothing.

“There have been vehicles parked entirely on a pavement, but not being booked.”

Police admitted that there had been complaints about the parking problem, but said police community support officers had been sent to the scene.
