A Lampeter-based police inspector has launched a crackdown on the drinking of alcohol on the streets of the town.

Insp Chris Fraser is looking to raise awareness of the town’s existing Public Spaces Protection Order which she feels many people do not know about.

“It was introduced, as a Designated Public Place Order, as a joint piece of work by Ceredigion County Council and Dyfed-Powys Police many years ago and is still in place,” she told the Cambrian News.

“However, speaking to people in the town it appears to be largely unknown.

“We have a whole new generation of young people out and enjoying Lampeter town who will have never heard of it - new licensees and new university students etc.

“Lampeter is a wonderfully cultured and historic university town and I believe strongly that everyone living here has the right to enjoy this peacefully.

“We work with our licensing officer, pub licensees and the town council to ensure that the town’s social life can thrive in a responsible way that supports local businesses whilst respecting others within the community - the sensible and responsible consumption of alcohol is just one part of this.”
