THE people of Lampeter want their police station to again be open 24 hours a day.
That was the uncompromising message from town councillors when a delegation of Dyfed-Powys Police officers paid them a visit last week.
Back in April, police slashed the station’s opening hours from 24 to 16 and revealed that Lampeter would instead be covered at night by mobile patrols from Aberystwyth and Cardigan.
But the move has proved unpopular with residents as well as councillors and police chiefs are now reviewing the situation.
“We want Lampeter back as a 24-hour station,” town mayor Cllr Hag Harris told the officers.
“It has a night-time economy, a student population and a number of itinerant workers.
“I question the response time to incidents and note that there has been something of a resurgence in nightlife despite the closure of the Black Lion.”
Chief Inspector Steve Davies said that a decision on whether to revert to 24-hour station opening would be announced in the coming weeks.
“We haven’t found the silver bullet giving us the answer,” he said.
“We need some activity analysis on what officers do on their shifts.
“No decision has been made as yet. We may keep the 1am or 3am station closure or revert to how things were before.”
