People have been evacuated from homes in Beddgelert and police have issued a warning to avoid the area.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, mountain rescue teams and North Wales Police were deployed to Beddgelert overnight to deal with issues caused by flood water as a result of significant rain fall over the past 24 hours.

Both the rivers Glaslyn and Colwyn caused some flooding in the town and to low-lying properties, with a small number of properties being evacuated by NWFRS.

"All agencies would encourage persons to avoid the area, and avoid entering flood water in their vehicles, as this could result in them becoming stranded and pose significant risk to the occupants as well as cause significant damage to vehicles,” North Wales Police said.

“It is likely to take many hours for the flood water to subside, and all agencies would encourage both locals and visitors to stay away from both the river and flooded areas for their own safety.”

North Wales Police said the A487 at Garndolbenmaen had closed due to flooding and to avoid the area, and teams had also been deployed there to deal with flooding.

Gwynedd Council said: “The A498 is currently closed between Beddgelert and Pen y Gwryd due to flooding.”

Elsewhere, North Wales Police said the A496 at Llanbedr was blocked due to a fallen tree “bringing down power lines”.

“Please avoid the area. Highways are aware and will be attending,” a spokesperson said.
