AN ABERYSTWYTH timber merchant has expressed safety concerns after three caravans were destroyed by fire in a nearby storage yard within the space of five days.
After firefighters were called to a blaze which tore through one caravan at the NP4 Transport site — also known as the old train station yard — in Bow Street last Wednesday, the fire service has confirmed it is investigating another fire which destroyed two caravans at the same location on Sunday evening.
After receiving the first call at 9.47am last Wednesday, fire crews were called to extinguish the fire, which destroyed one static caravan. There were no reports of any injuries.
Fire crews from Aberystwyth were again called on to extinguish two caravans which had caught fire on the same site at 7.48pm on Sunday.
A fire service spokesman said there was no link between the two fires, adding that the fire on Wednesday was confirmed as accidental and Sunday’s fire was under investigation.
But Matt Turner, assistant manager of Huws Gray building and timber suppliers, which is located within 300 yards of the storage yard, told the Cambrian News he was concerned because of the amount of flammable material on the Huws Gray site. He said: “The size of the fire was huge — it was blazing. We have got hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of timber on the site, not to mention the oil tanks and gas cylinders.”
NP4 said they were devastated by the fires but the situation is now under control.
