A SAFETY warning has been issued after a pensioner was hospitalised following a candle fire in his home in Trefor.

Firefighters from Nefyn and Pwllheli were called around 10pm to a property in Trefor last Thursday, which resulted in a 90-year-old man being taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd for smoke inhalation shortly after.

It is believed the fire started in the house on New Street from a candle which was being used by the man during a power cut.

The fire caused 100 per cent damage to the kitchen and severe heat and smoke damage to both the ground and first floor.

The incident has prompted a senior office from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service to urge people to take care when using candles at home.

Stuart Millington, senior fire safety manager for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: “This incident highlights the dangers of candles left unattended and how easily fires can happen.

“Candles are a typical sight in many homes — but it’s important to remember they are not just decorative features. Left unattended, an open flame could leave a trail of devastation.

“We attended 20 fires involving candles last year – and although this number is thankfully relatively low, when they do happen, they can cause devastating damage.

"Although they look attractive, candles are still open flames and extra care needs to be taken. Another option is to use a battery-operated tea light — these are inexpensive but just as effective at creating an atmosphere and are much safer. Also, it’s a good idea to keep torches and spare batteries for use in the event of a power cut.”

Mr Millington advises residents using candles to make sure they are secured in a proper holder and never leave them unattended

He added: “Even by taking precautions, it’s vital to be prepared should the worst happen. A working smoke alarm can give you the vital time you need to get out, stay out, and call 999. Keep yourself and your loved ones safe by testing your alarm regularly and by planning and practising an escape route.”
