Police have launched an investigation after two Llyn schools were forced to close their doors when lead was stolen from their roofs, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Ysgol Chwilog and Ysgol Pentreuchaf were forced to close after rain revealed the problem at both buildings.

On Tuesday, 2 April, Ysgol Pentreuchaf said in a post online: “Apologies for the inconvenience today. It appears that thieves have stolen lead from the school roof causing substantial damage and repair costs. Over £2,000 of damage has been caused in return for £30 worth of lead!”

A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “Last week, it became apparent that damage had been caused to the roof on Ysgol Pentreuchaf and Ysgol Chwilog due to the theft of lead.

“Both schools were temporarily closed for a period last week due to damage caused by water leaking into the buildings. Following emergency repair work, both Ysgol Pentreuchaf and Ysgol Chwilog are now open.

“This is a matter for concern and the incidents have been reported to the police. We encourage anyone with any information regarding the matter to contact the police as soon as possible. We have also contacted other schools in the county to inform them about these incidents.”

Police confirmed this week that they are investigating the possibility that lead was stolen from the schools and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 101.
