Storm Barra has battered mid and north Wales over night, causing flooding and damage across the area.

Yesterday, Natural Resources Wales issued flood warnings for Aberystwyth seafront, Borth, Clarach Bay, Aberaeron and Cardigan.

Overnight the Cambrian News received footage showing waves crashing onto Aberystwyth and Borth seafronts, and photographs demonstrating the extent of the damage this morning.

The Coastguard conducted a search into the night, following a report of suspected people in the sea in Aberystwyth. But nothing was found, with the incident being categorised as a “false alert with good intent”.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard said: “At around 10pm on 7 December, HM Coastguard’s assistance was requested by Dyfed Powys Police following a report of suspected people in the water in Aberystwyth.

“Aberystwyth and Borth Coastguard Rescue Teams, the Coastguard helicopter from Caernarfon and the Welsh Ambulance Service were sent.

“A thorough search was conducted with nothing found.”

This morning, at 8.25am, Ceredigion County Council confirmed Marine Terrace, in Aberystwyth, is closed between the Pier and Albert Place, due to the impact of Storm Barra overnight.

In north Wales, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board said adverse weather conditions had impacted opening times of Covid-19 testing units.

A health board spokesperson said: “Please keep in mind that testing sites listed on our website might close at short notice.

“At the time of booking your PCR test on the Welsh Government Portal, you will be advised which test sites are open and closest to you.”

Additionally, Gwynedd Council have confirmed the A497 between Efailnewydd and Pwllheli remains closed due to a fallen tree.

A spokesperson for Gwynedd Council said: “The driving conditions are poor – we advise all road-users to drive to the conditions and to take care.

“The A497 is still closed at the moment. Work is ongoing to clear the road.”

Transport for Wales also confirmed yesterday (7 December) they would be running an amended timetable on most routes due to anticipated affects of Storm Barra, and urged all passengers to check their travel plans prior to travelling.

They added “normal service is expected to return on 9 December”.
