A DRINK-driver who crashed his car into a wall has been handed a two-year driving ban.

David Andrew Radcliffe, of Trefor, was two-and-a-half times the legal limit when he struck the wall in his Jeep Grand Cherokee on New Street on Sunday, 22 May.

The 57-year-old was seen crashing into the wall by a witness and was later found to have 92 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Radcliffe appeared before Caernarfon Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol. Prosecutor Diane Williams told justices the former computer salesman was seen “driving in an erratic manner” following the crash.

The witness, whose house Radcliffe had crashed into, followed the car on foot and found it at the driver’s home address, where the 57-year-old was “inspecting the damage”.

When the man said he was going to call the police, Radcliffe told him not to and called him a “w***** and a d*******”.

When he was arrested, the drink-driver told police he had “done wrong” and was “ashamed of his actions”.

The court heard that Radcliffe had been unemployed for two years, had been taking anti-depressants and was having matrimonial difficulties.

Justices were told that the 57-year-old had no previous convictions and that he hadn’t had an alcoholic drink since the incident in May.

Sentencing, chair of the bench Peter Lunt Williams fined Radcliffe £120, ordered him to pay court costs of £85 and a £30 victim surcharge.

Radcliffe wept as he was banned from driving for 24 months. He can reduce that penalty by a quarter if he completes a drink-driving rehabilitation course.
