A CWMANN man has been ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and slapped with a restraining order after being found guilty of assaulting a woman and a child.
Gary David John Evans of Oakdale, Treherbert Street, was convicted at a trial on 3 January, after pleading not guilty to the two offences of assault by beating. Evans, 28, appeared before Aberystwyth magistrates on Wednesday for sentencing.
The court heard that a woman and a 17-year-old boy suffered injuries including a bloody nose, black eyes, concussion and bruised jaw in the attack which happened near Lampeter on 14 November last year.
The court heard Evans pushed the woman against the wall, forcing her head to hit the wall, during a row.
Magistrates were told that at one point Evans yanked the woman’s hair so hard that he ripped out a clump of hair.
A victim impact statement read in court said that the pair were “living in fear” and were left “terrified” after the incident.
The incident affected them “physically, psychologically, and emotionally,” the court heard.
Janem Jones, defending, said that Evans believed he was “acting in self-defence” and that he was “sorry for his actions”.
Ms Jones told the court that Evans had been brought up in foster care since the age of eight and that he had “always been taught to stand up for himself and retaliate”.
“He would welcome the opportunity to learn how to walk away from situations such as this,” she added.
Evans had previously pleaded guilty to a separate charge of possessing 2.54 grams of cannabis.
Evans was made the subject of an 18-month community order, to include 150 hours of unpaid work and 25 days of a ‘respectful relationships’ rehabilitation course. He was also ordered to pay a combined £200 in compensation to the victims along with court costs of £420 and an £85 surcharge. Evans was also given an indefinite restraining order not to contact the two victims.
No separate penalty was imposed for the cannabis offence, but a destruction order was made for the drugs and seeds.
