CALLS have been made for more police patrols in Cardigan after a local youth was seriously injured in a violent incident.

Town councillors heard that a young man was hospitalised following the incident on Barley Saturday.

Ferwig Community Council wrote to Tuesday’s meeting about their concerns, and called for a campaign to increased police presence on the streets and CCTV to be reinstated. The council also suggested increased lighting at strategic points in the town.

Cllr John Adams-Lewis was hopeful that the new Police and Crime Commissioner would bring police back to the streets and keep stations open.

Cllr Jane Roche stated the issues should be raised at a PACT meeting. She said: “They are valid points, but it will come down to funding unfortunately. We need to know we are a safe community and a police presence, even as a calming influence, needs to be there.”

Cllr Adams-Lewis said: “Since they moved the station out of town, it’s out of sight - out of mind.”

Cllr Gwynfi Jenkins reminded councillors that the town’s CCTV cameras were lost due to cuts. He said: “We are fighting against the tide again.”

Cllr Clive Evans said there should have been more police around due to the Barley Saturday event, and added that parts of the town were very dark at night.

He added that the cost of running a CCTV system may have reduced, and it may be possible to return it to Cardigan.

Councillors agreed to raise their concerns at the next PACT meeting, and invite the new commissioner to meet them for a discussion about the issues.
