A MAIN road in and out of Aberystwyth has been closed this morning after heavy rain caused “severe” flooding.

The A44 between the Glanyrafon Industrial Estate and Lovesgrove Roundabout is closed in both directions after the river burst its banks.

Dyfed-Powys Police reported earlier this morning that the flooding had left “difficult driving conditions” - urging motorists to “avoid the area if you can.”

The road has now been closed in both directions as river levels peaked around 9.30am.

Natural Resources Wales put a flood warning in force in the early hours of the morning for the area.

Flooding has also affected the A4120, the playing fields and Pavilions at Llanbadarn, and Grovener Farm caravan site.

NRW said the heavy overnight rainfall “has now cleared the area” with “river levels in the Rheidol at Aberystwyth expected to rise until at least 9.30am".

The road is closed in both directions, with a diversion in place through Bow Street until further notice.

The flooding is described by authorities as "severe."

The road was closed at 8.15am, with the closure likely to last for several hours.

Ceredigion council has been informed and work teams are on the scene.
