Aberystwyth takes a central role in Netflix’s award-winning series The Crown.

The hit show on the streaming service was released last week, a year after streets in and around Aberystwyth were closed off to film the programme which chronicles the British Royal Family during the current reign of Elizabeth II.

Episode 6 of series three is entitled Tywysog Cymru and chronicles Prince Charles’ time at Aberystwyth University in 1969 in the run-up to his investiture. Prince Charles, played by Josh O’Conner, faced protests from nationalists during his semester in Aberystwyth where he attempted to learn the language.

Prince Charles’ Welsh tutor, Dr Edward Millward, played by Mark Lewis Jones in the show, was a founder of the Welsh Language Society/Cymdeithas yr Iaith and on the show is quite brusque with his new student – someone whose title of Prince of Wales he ultimately did not recognise.

Episode 6 of The Crown was filmed on the streets of Aberystwyth in 2018 and features a number of local people as extras as well as some instantly recognisable shots of the town.

From a public shelter on the promenade being daubed with Cymdeithas yr Iaith’s tafod, to a dilapidated Rheidol Hotel, which was situated next to the old college, and Corporation Street where the town’s library was until recently, the location team transformed a number of areas of Aberystwyth back to 1969 during their week in the town.

The scenes involved actors and extras dressed in vintage costumes and classic vehicles from the ’60s.
