The 2019 Cambrian News Aberystwyth 10k race held in December raised a spectacular £6,038, which will be distributed to local charities and groups.

The race, held on Sunday, 8 December, was held in honour of founder and organiser Carl Williams, who sadly died in November.

And it has been decided that half the proceeds – over £3,000 - will be donated in memory of Carl to Meurig ward, Aberystwyth, a cause close to his heart and a suggestion made by his daughters Kay and Lizzie.

Anita Worthing, of Aberystwyth Athletics Club, which organises the race, said: “This fantastic total is only possible due to the hard work of unpaid volunteers - for months beforehand by Aberystwyth Athletic Club, and on the day by the club, the council and community groups such as Raynet, the Air Cadets, Penparcau Scouts, and Rotaract; and sponsorship from yourselves for the cost of the medals, Kangaloos for providing the portable toilets at a discounted rate, and PDs Diner for providing bottles of water for the finish line.

“We also had a very good deal on the unique medals from Penrhiw Pottery of Ystumtuen.

“First aid cover was provided by St John Ambulance Wales - though fortunately they didn’t have much to do on the day!”

Applications are now open for all those local good causes who would like a share of the remaining £3,000.

To apply for a share of the race proceeds for your charity or local group, please send an application in writing to Natalie Lawson, stating what project you have in mind for the money.

Applications should be emailed to [email protected] or posted to Natalie Lawson, Cambrian News, 7 Aberystwyth Science Park,
