Arthritis Care

THE ABERYSTWYTH Branch of Arthritis Care had some interesting talks during the months leading up to Christmas. A lady from the museum came to talk to the group about the ships that had been built in and around Aberystwyth before the use of steam. Dana Edwards talked about learning to do Creative Writing in Carmarthen which lead to the publication of her novel The Other Man. They also went for Christmas Dinner in the Marine Hotel, which they thoroughly enjoyed. The group’s first meeting of 2016 is on Monday, 1 February at 7pm in Gerddi Ffynnon. Members who are coming on the minibus will need to contact co-ordinator and let her know by Saturday, 30 January so she can let the driver know.

CANTM

THE START of the group’s 25th year celebrations began with a coffee morning at Waunfawr Community Hall where David Steeds spoke on the politics of commemoration in different countries of the world, which the audience found both interesting and enjoyable. On the 23 February, the Winter Warmer will be held at Brynamlwg starting at 10.30am with the speaker being Cyril Baker from Jewellery House, Aberystwyth. The topic is the importance of valuation and insurance of jewellery. The five-day holiday to Dorset in April proved very successful, with 45 members booked. New members are always welcome. Give Gillian a ring on 01970 627943 to join the active association of local National Trust members.

Horticultural Society

THE NEXT meeting of the Cardiganshire Horticultural Society will be on Tuesday, 9 February at 7.30pm in the Waunfawr Community Hall, when Sheena Crossley, a regular broadcaster and columnist from Cardiff, will be talking about Monet’s Garden and Paris Chateau. The talk will revive memories for some members who visited Monet’s Darden at Giverny as part of a celebrated CHS over-seas tour to Normandy 20 years ago. Summer trips are a very important part of the CHS year and the meeting will have the first preview of the six trips which have been organised to a range of gardens for the coming season, and for which bookings will open in March. In addition, plans are also in hand for the society’s autumn tour to Pembrokeshire. All are welcome and further information on the society, and its activities, is available from secretary, David Hughes on 01974 241458.
