Beekeepers
THE ANNUAL general meeting of the Aberystwyth Beekeepers Association took place on Tuesday, 19 January, in Waunfawr Community Hall at 7.30pm. The meeting was well attended and began with the chairman, Rob Davies, warmly thanking all who had helped make the past year very successful. However, it had been a poor year for honey production with most members reporting only small surpluses on account of the poor weather. The successful purchase by the association of bulk supplies for members continues. Educational and promotional work with bees continued and remains an important part of activities. A small grant had been received from the Co-op which had been used to purchase education materials – a candle rolling kit, children’s bee booklets and two nucleus boxes. The beginners’ course for 2015/16 is continuing with 12 students. The highlight of the meeting was the presentation to Lynfa Davies of her Master Beekeeper certificate, a truly wonderful achievement and the first member of the association to obtain this prestigious award. The following principal elections were made: Chairman, Rob Davies; vice-chairman and membership secretary, Phillip Spring-ham; secretary, Ann Ovens; and treasurer, Richard Spencer. The evening concluded with the 2016 programme of events and meetings being discussed. A good programme of visits to apiaries, a honey show, an outing to Powys Castle and skep making as well as evening talks, is now being drawn up. Evening meetings will con-tinue on the third Tuesday of the month in Waunfawr Community Hall at 7.30pm. Further information on the association and its activities is available from Ann Ovens on 01970 832359.
