Côr Meibion Aberystwyth
FEBRUARY proved to be a busy month for the choir. On Saturday, 13 February, the choir was invited to sing at the wedding of one of its members Frank Alsopp to Phyllis at Penrhyncoch church. Following the marriage service, the choir retired to the church hall for the reception, but had to sing for their supper before the meal. In the unavoidable absence of their musical director Alwyn, the choir was led by Glyn Jones, deputy conductor. On Sunday, 28 February, the choir travelled to Llandudno to join in concert with Côr Meibion Maelgwn, whose conductor Trystan Lewis, a former member of Aberystwyth, was in charge for the last time. The concert was held at Seilo Chapel, reputedly the largest in North Wales, to a capacity audience. Both choirs sang individually songs from their own repertoires and combined to sing pieces such as Morte Christe, American Trilogy and Y Tangnefeddwyr, Eric Jones’s arrangement of the poem composed by Waldo Williams at the time of the German bombing of Swansea during World War Two almost 75 years to the day. Potential new members and visitors are always welcome to come to listen to a practice evening at 7pm on Thursdays at the rugby club.
Cymdeithas yr Aelwyd
NOS Wener, 26 Chwefror, bu’r aelodau’n dathlu Gwyl Ddewi yn Llety Parc. Croesawyd pawb gan ein llywydd anrhydeddus, Delyth Fletcher, ac wedi inni fwynhau’r wledd ardderchog cyflwynodd Delyth ein gwr gwadd, sef y Parch Ganon Stuart Bell. Gwr o Torquay yw Stuart ddaeth i’n gwlad am y tro cyntaf fel ymwelydd yn y 1960au, a chael ei ddrysu’n llwyr gan yr arwyddbost sy’n ymddangos yma a thraw i ddangos y ffordd i’r lle a elwir, fe dybiau, yn ’Llwybr cyhoeddus.’ Wedi iddo symud yma, dysgodd yr iaith a chael profiad diddorol wrth barcio ei gar yn Llanberis. Wrth edrych nôl ar yr etifeddiaeth ddaeth ag e i’r noson arbennig hon yn Llety Parc, mae’n cofio geiriau Eseia – ystyriwch y graig y cawsoch eich naddu ohoni, a’r chwarel y cawsoch eich cloddio ohoni. Wrth ddathlu Gwyl Ddewi y mae pawb yn hawlio rhan o Dewi oedd yn ddisgybl i’r Arglwydd Iesu, ac anogodd Stuart ni i beidio â chanmol y dyn ond i ganmol ei feistr.
