Lions Club

ABERYSTWYTH Lions club have been engaged in a school pupil feeding project in the Phillipines. The club, along with fellow lions at the Laoac United Lions in Northern Philippines, launched the project “for the most vulnerable and least fortunate members of the community” chosen by the teachers and village leaders. “Personally, I didn’t entertain any doubt whatsoever that the program is a sound investment in the education of the young,”Aberystwyth Lions Club president and charter president of the Laoac United Lions Club, Benjamin Manluctao said. “Good nutrition improves daily school attendance and gives much better concentration in class, resulting in better class participation during classroom recitations, less failures or repeaters.” The project forms part of the Lions Club’s Centennial Service Challenge.

Cambrian Mountains Society

THE spring equinox was several hours old when 12 members of the Cambrian Mountains Society set off from Maesnant up Cwm Hyddgen. Without its summer flush of purple moor grass the valley floor soon re-vealed both the possible remains of a Bronze Age stone row and also the more well-known Glyndwr’s Covenant Stones. Not a red dragon but a rather beige common lizard had taken up home on one of the stones. The cosy hand of a non-predatory visitor soon warmed the blood of the little dragon before we left him/her as custodian of the stone. The group’s next objective was the top of Banc Llechwedd mawr (560m). The summit’s two Bronze Age funereal cairns framed fine views of Pumlumon to the south, with Cader Idris and Aran Fawddwy in the distance. The sun was now high in a cloud free sky, a good time for a sandwich. On the move again our way was down the hill’s long west ridge to the Bwlch, separating the day’s hill from its neighbour, Drosgol. On the descent a group of steel mesh hoops were spotted, not more archaeology but part of an upland ecology study. Homebound, back into Hyddgen, the valley bottom and its ‘disco grass’ were avoided before cutting down to the recently reinstated bridge over the river.

Rotary Club

ABERYSTWYTH Rotary Club has raised £600 for Action for Children’s Ceredigion young carers service in its annual collection. The cheque was presented to the service coordinator, Nicola Crossman, recently in a small ceremony in the town. The Rotary Club raises money for the Ceredigion young carers every year and also holds an activity day in the summer at the Capel Bangor Golf Club for the young people who use this important local service.Hywel Wyn Jones from Aberystwyth Rotary Club said: “The club is deeply committed to raising as much money as we can for these young people who have had an enormous burden placed on them from such an early age. Growing up is challenging enough without having to look after a family member and it is humbling to meet these amazing youngsters each year at Capel Bangor Golf Club. I hope the money raised goes some way to giving these young people a break and semblance of a normal childhood.”Nicola Crossman, service coordinator for Ceredigion young carers, said: “I’m really grateful to the Rotary Club for the money they raise each year. These children and young people do a wonderful job for the people they care for and it’s a privilege to work with them. The money raised will help me take them away for a short holiday and contribute to giving them a childhood they deserve and we’re so thankful for their continued support.”

Cambrian Floral Society

WEDNESDAY evening, 2 March, saw our chairman John James demonstrate a spring theme. As March includes both St David’s Day and Easter this year he was able to incorporate both into his designs. To introduce the spring theme he used a figurine container from his national showing days and in this he created a flowing design. He moved on to a double placement design using the national emblem flower of Wales, the daffodil, with yellow and white tulips weaved between the beautiful branches of Elaeagnus pungens ‘Maculata’. Following this was an Easter modern arrangement in white using Fatsia japonica leaves and Lilium candidum which were illuminated by a flowerhead lamp. Before he moved on to the last arrangement of the evening, refreshments were prepared by Margaret, Dyfri, Joy and Ray. To conclude his demonstration a stunning piece of driftwood was placed to enhance his landscape design. This was outlined by a magnificent branch of hazel which included early flowering catkins. He added Aucuba japonica, daffodils, tulips and primula and a harp as an accessory. The surprise of the evening came when he trans-formed this landscape design into an Easter design by replacing the harp with a hen, chicks, and Easter eggs hanging from the hazel branch.Next month we meet for a workshop with Nicola of Cascades, Lampeter who established her floristry business over 25 years ago. This will be held at Bethel Chapel vestry on Wednesday, 6 April at 7pm. She will be demonstrating two contemporary designs of which you can choose one to attempt. For all details and to obtain a list of requirements please contact 07580 776302 or contact Nicola direct on 01570 422403.

Ceredigion WI

CEREDIGION Women’s Institute supported International Women’s day on 12 March with an open morning for members in their office in Aberystwyth. Over the years the event has become a global day of celebration and is recognised as a national day in many countries around the world. This day of recognition reflects the ethos of The Women’s Institute, also (inspiring women). Robust, and successful campaigns demonstrate women’s lack of equal parity within their work places and within their homes. Since 1910 when Clara Zetkin suggested an annual Women’s Day women have mobilised themselves together in their quest for equality and still do so. Together with other influential campaigners we are still striving to improve women’s rights throughout the world.Any ladies who might be interested in finding out more about our manifesto please contact our office.Telephone 01970 612831 and leave your name and telephone number for us to respond to you.
