AN ABERYSTWYTH primary school has been crowned champion of a TV Christmas carol singing competition.

Ysgol Gymraeg was the winner of this year’s Carol yr Wyl carol composition and performance competition, which called on competitors to compose and perform a brand new Christmas carol and was broadcast on S4C.

The carol was composed by two school staff members, Aled Morgan and Gareth James — the first time they have come together to compose and compete in Carol yr Wyl.

Organised by the Tinopolis television company, 38 schools entered the competition, which were cut down to a shortlist of 10.

The performances of those 10 schools were broadcast over a two-week period on the Prynhawn Da and Heno S4C programmes leading up to Christmas.

The school decided to offer everyone from years four, five and six who wanted to be a member of the choir to be part of the performance, attracting almost 70 members.

Headteacher Clive Williams said: “We are delighted with the school’s success in this year’s competition.

“We were all very proud to get shortlisted, let alone win. It was a very good competition, with each of the 10 schools on television performing beautifully.

“But I believe that Mr Morgan’s beautiful melody and Mr James’s striking words, together with the children’s superb performance and the special soloist of Ioan that contributed to winning the trophy.”
