The Polish community in Aberystwyth has staged a demonstration in support of pro-choice.
Since 22 October, protests against a Polish government court ruling, tightening abortion laws, have swept across Poland.
The country already has “one of the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe”, according to Amnesty International.
On 29 October, the Polish natives living in Aberystwyth gathered for one minute to show support for those protesting in Poland.
On behalf of the Polish community, one protester said: “Polish people in Aberystwyth gathered for one minute to show their support to people in Poland who are currently protesting against the government changing the abortion law, which leads to an almost complete ban of abortion in the country.
“The new law forbids the termination of pregnancy, even if the foetus has severe defects that may lead to death.
“From 22 October, people in Poland are protesting every day and on Friday, 30 October in Warsaw there was the biggest protest against the Polish government.”
They added: “We would also want to say that taking the picture took exactly one minute, we are all wearing our masks for the whole time and keeping our distance.
“We took it between lectures and did not spend any more time with each other to keep all of us safe in this difficult time.”
Amnesty International said: “Abortion is only allowed if the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, if the woman’s life is in danger or in cases of severe or fatal foetal impairment.
“Now, the parliament is considering a bill to add even more restrictions to this very limited access.
“If it goes ahead, this proposed bill will remove severe or fatal foetus impairment from the list of permitted groups – putting many women’s health at serious risk.”
Protesters are urging people from “across Europe” to sign this petition in support of their cause: https://secure.avaaz.org/campaign/pl/solidarity_with_polish_women_35/
