An Aberystwyth primary school is one of 20 from across the UK to win the first National Magazine Day competition.
Plascrug School received a bundle of magazines as their prize.
They won them in a competition to celebrate National Magazine Day (14 October) celebrating the power of magazines to inspire a love of reading and support children’s literacy, particularly among more reluctant readers. To mark the occasion, 70,000 magazines were given to children who might not otherwise have access to them.
In its inaugural year, more than 10,000 families across the UK entered the nationwide schools competition to win a magazine bundle.
Leading publishers - Immediate, DC Thomson, Egmont, Kennedy and Future – came together with distribution partner Frontline, literacy organisations, including the National Literacy Trust, and independent charities such as The Children’s Book Project and Book Bank Charity, and a wave of independent publishers joined the movement, including Creature & Co, Howzat, Storytime, Launchpad Publishing and Young Stock, demonstrating the breadth, creativity and commitment of the wider magazine sector.
The national schools competition ran from 1 July-1 September, inviting parents and carers to nominate their child’s school to receive children’s magazines. Twenty winning schools were selected, each receiving 250 magazines to support reading for pleasure in classrooms and libraries. Families who nominated a winning school will received a £100 Amazon voucher as a thank you for taking part.
Reflecting on the campaign’s first year, Ali Foster-Grose, Director of Community & Events at Immediate said: “The response from families has been extraordinary, and the support from publishers - from household names to brilliant new indie titles - demonstrates the impact we can have when we work collectively.
“Our ambition is for National Magazine Day to grow year on year, reaching even more children and helping to make reading accessible, enjoyable and part of everyday life.”
