Madam,

In September last year you published a letter from me drawing the attention of your readers to the dangers of the junction between Heol y Fronfraith (aka Conker Lane) and the A44 in Llanbadarn Fawr.

As anticipated in that letter nothing has subsequently been done by the highway authority to alleviate the dangers.

Last Saturday, 10 February, there was a further serious accident at the junction in the early evening between a car which seems to have been driven down the lane into the junction where it collided with a vehicle apparently driven on the A44 from the Aberystwyth direction.

The police, ambulance and fire brigade were called to the scene and the air ambulance helicopter also attended. The A44 was closed for several hours.

The woman driver of the car was trapped and was seen receiving a drip from an ambulance man through the window.

I did not personally witness the scene - I was house-bound suffering from what I imagine was the flu - but have seen photographs of the scene from which I have made deductions.

That was the second serious accident and second road closure on this stretch of the A44 in a fortnight. The previous accident involved a car which left the road, crossed the verge and landed in the field adjacent to Grove Cottage.

I know nothing of the circumstances of that accident; I only saw the aftermath from several hundred yards away.

I continue to be astonished at the failure of the highway authority to make any improvements to this stretch of the A44 and in particular to the A44/Heol y Fronfraith junction.

This stretch of the road is very dangerous: it is narrow, there are no pavements or walkable verges, and there are no speed limits or double white lines. The sight line from Heol y Fronfraith in each direction (but particularly to the right towards Aberystwyth) is very limited.

I have in the past brought to the attention of the highway authority numerous steps they could take at minimal cost to alleviate the dangers pending more costly improvements to the width and alignment of the A44.

Inter alia they could extend the 40mph limit from the Glanyrafon junction to the bridge, could make the bottom 50 yards or so of Heol y Fronfraith one way only so as to prevent vehicles entering the A44 from the lane, they could paint double white lines on the A44 to prevent overtaking, and could add to the signage by drawing attention to the hidden side roads and drives and the dangers of collision which exist.

Despite my complaints over many years I have received no explanation from the highway authority for their inactivity in guarding against the danger of death and injury at this terrifying and terrible junction.

Do we not deserve more responsible behaviour from them? Are they waiting from someone to be killed before they take action?

Yours etc,

Hywel Moseley, Nantceiro, Llanbadarn Fawr.
